Is therapy right for me?

There are many different reasons to begin seeing a therapist. For those who have been in therapy before, it might be time to go back. I believe therapy is most effective when you are motivated to make a shift. It can be difficult for many people to take this step because a lot of times we become familiar with the life we are leading and changing that can seem scary. The fact that you are reading this page shows that you have taken the very first steps.

How long does therapy last?

Just like the process of therapy itself, the duration varies depending on the person and the work to be done. It can range from 6 sessions to a more long term plan. Meaningful growth usually happens with focused work and looks different for each person. Some people have specific target goals, while others wish to use therapy in a more free-form manner. Discussion about setting goals, ending therapy or taking a break is part of the process, with the ultimate aim being to have gained the insight, strength, and knowledge to live a more fulfilling and thriving life.

Does what I talk about in therapy stay private?

One of the reasons why therapy works is because it involves building a trusting relationship with the therapist. In order to foster this trust, all therapists have legal and ethical obligations to keep client information confidential. Many people might be concerned with revealing uncomfortable or shameful secrets, yet the process of sharing in a safe environment can lead to profound growth.

While maintaining privacy is essential, there are legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality. These reasons include suspected past or current abuse of a minor, elder (over age 65), or an adult dependent and If the therapist has reason to suspect a client is seriously in danger of harming themselves or has threatened to harm another person.
